Hauturu is a global symbol of conservation success and innovation.
The Hauturu Supporters Trust recognises Ngāti Manuhiri as kaitiaki, or guardians of Hauturu.
The Trust is partnering with Ngāti Manuhiri to support our shared aspirations for Hauturu. These aspirations are underpinned by Te Hauturu-ō-Toi/Little Barrier Conservation Management Plan, agreed by Ngāti Manuhiri and the Auckland Conservation Board in 2017.

Hauturu is New Zealand’s largest island nature reserve (excluding the subantarctic islands). At 722 metres above sea level, its peak is the highest in the Auckland region.

In 1894 the Crown used legislation to forcibly purchase the island from its owners. In 1895, Hauturu became New Zealand’s first nature reserve. This gives it the highest level of environmental protection available under New Zealand law. Access to the Island is heavily restricted, with landing prohibited except by permit and strict biosecurity rules and protocols for those people lucky enough to visit.
