Hauturu is Aotearoa’s oldest nature reserve and its most intact, least disturbed ecosystem.
Hauturu is New Zealand’s largest island nature reserve (excluding the subantarctic islands). At 722 metres above sea level, its peak is the highest in the Auckland region.
In 1894 the Crown used legislation to forcibly purchase the island from its owners. In 1895, Hauturu became New Zealand’s first nature reserve. This gives it the highest level of environmental protection available under New Zealand law. Access to the Island is heavily restricted, with landing prohibited except by permit and strict biosecurity rules and protocols for those people lucky enough to visit.
